At MakeUp in Paris 2026, Cosmetics Inspiration & Creation hosted a Beauty Talk dedicated to one of the most powerful forces currently reshaping beauty: social media virality.

Led by Enora Le Roux, Innovation Consultant & Product Expert, alongside Coralie Arme, Forecasting & Insight Expert, the session titled “The Viral Beauty Economy: Decoding Social Media Power in the U.S.” explored how social platforms are influencing beauty visibility, purchase behaviors and product innovation.

Based on Cosmetics Inspiration & Creation's Monthly Social Book, which tracks beauty trends and brand performance across social media, the talk highlighted the key signals shaping the beauty conversation in early 2026.

The team explored how TikTok and Instagram are now not only communication channels, but also strategic drivers of brand acceleration, trend amplification, and beauty innovation.

For those who couldn't attend the session, here's a recap of the three key trend signals that illustrate how the Viral Beauty Economy is transforming the industry.

seamless perfection - optimized skin

@jasminnlily_

The first trend, Seamless Perfection, reflects a shift from simply embracing natural skin to subtly optimizing it. This evolution mirrors a broader cultural movement in which authenticity and refinement no longer stand in opposition, but coexist. Consumers are seeking a complexion that feels credible and real while being discreetly enhanced.

This shift is clearly visible on social media, where skin prep has become a key performance step in makeup routines. With #skinprepformakeup surpassing 122M views on TikTok, skincare is increasingly designed to optimize makeup results. Exfoliating pads, hydrating bases and smoothing routines help refine skin texture before makeup, creating the seamless, "no texture" finish consumers are seeking.

Another expression of this trend is Mist-Veiled Skin, where facial mists are used between makeup layers or throughout the day to help makeup blend more seamlessly while maintaining a fresh, hydrated glow. This technique has gained traction through viral products such as Anua's PDRN Collagen Glow Facial Serum Spray, whose use in layered makeup application has significantly boosted the brand's visibility on social media.

The pursuit of seamless perfection also extends to application tools. As lightweight skin tints continue to grow, brushes are making a comeback to deliver a more controlled, diffused and even finish. Refy's Skin Base Skin Tint, paired with its Complexion Brush, perfectly illustrates this approach. Its lightweight, hydrating gel formula, combined with a dedicated brush and an integrated palette built into the packaging, reflects the growing demand for a complexion that looks natural while being meticulously optimized.

Precision SHAPING - Makeup as shapewear

MPH Beauty - Underpainting Face Palette

The second trend, Precision Shaping, reflects the rise of a more anatomy-driven approach to makeup. Inspired by aesthetic procedures, the makeup as shapewear movement and the growing influence of looksmaxxing culture, consumers are no longer using makeup simply to enhance their features, but to refine the architecture of the face.

This shift is evident in the viral success of techniques such as the Snatched Jawline hack, where slightly pulling the ear helps define contour placement along the jawline. The same search for precision can be seen in the Sharp Nose Hack, with #nosecontour surpassing 880M views on TikTok, as creators use ultra-fine brushes to create more structured shadows and increasingly sculpted facial features.

The same logic extends to the under-eye area, which has become a new zone for micro-optimization. With interest in #hollowundereyes up +904% YoY, consumers are looking beyond traditional concealers to restore volume and create a fresher, more lifted appearance. In this context, Volufiline has emerged as a viral ingredient, often described on TikTok as a "filler in a bottle." This growing interest has been fueled by viral products such as The Ordinary's Volufiline 92% + Pal-Isoleucine 1%, which has brought the ingredient into the spotlight and reflects consumers' demand for non-invasive solutions that precisely target facial volume.

WHIMSICAL AESTHETIC - playful & expressive makeup

@lisabarcelox

Alongside the pursuit of precision and optimization, Whimsical Aesthetic is emerging as a more playful and expressive movement, as interest in #whimsicalmakeup has surged by over +1,000% YoY. Driven by the consumers’ growing need for escapism, fantasy and emotional release, color, creativity and imagination are making a strong comeback in beauty routines, turning makeup into a space for experimentation, self-expression and the romanticization of everyday life.

Artists such as Zara Larsson are helping popularize a more joyful, fantasy-led beauty aesthetic that breaks away from minimalism, while the return of Euphoria has inspired creators to reinterpret the show's iconic beauty codes through their own lens. Rather than recreating a character's makeup, they incorporate rhinestones, vibrant colors and graphic details into highly personal, creative looks. This trend is less about perfection and more about self-expression, experimentation and creative play.

This renewed appetite for expressive beauty is also reflected in product innovation. Marc Jacobs Beauty's return is built around a positioning centered on creativity and self-expression, with the ambition of encouraging experimentation. This vision is perfectly illustrated by the Born Star Eyeshadow. With its star-shaped compact, bold shades and charm-inspired packaging, the product transforms makeup into both a creative tool and an object of desire, inviting consumers to bring more play, color and emotion into their beauty routines.

The cic take

Social media is no longer just accelerating trends or serving as a channel for brand visibility. It is reshaping the way beauty value is created, influencing purchasing behaviors, accelerating the emergence of new brands, and driving the rapid adoption of new consumer aspirations. What emerges from these signals is an increasingly multifaceted consumer mindset: beauty is expected to be optimized, precise and emotionally engaging all at once.

The key challenge is not just to follow trends, but to understand what drives them. Brands need to identify recurring signals, anticipate shifts in consumer expectations, and translate them into relevant innovation and communication strategies.
